Creating a MySQL Database!
Creating a database in the infinityfree site using the steps provided this week wasn’t too hard. The steps weren’t exactly a step by step guide, they were more so checkpoints that you should be at.
The first step said to click on Create New MySQLdatabases. There wasn’t an option in the Vistapanel that let you directly create a MySQL database. You had to click into the MySQL Databases icon, and in there was an option that said “New Database”, you then had to type in the name of your database, then click the Create Database button.
The second step said to click on phpMyAdmin to open up the database. Then design our own table properties. Under Create Table we could give a name to our table, then choose the amount of columns for the table. In the example there were three, we were instructed to use two. I used username and password because the second part of this weeks assignment was to connect php to our databases and have a user input a username and password. One of the tasks this week was to fully understand the difference between some of the TYPES were. For example, VARCHAR is a variable-length string that can consist of text, numbers, and special characters. INT can only be used for holding whole numbers. It is especially important to know what type of data you will be holding in the fields to prevent data from getting corrupted. Changing the type later is risky, time-consuming, and causes downtime of the system.
The third step was to navigate to the insert tab and fill out data to test the database. This part was pretty straightforward. There were Functions that you could call if needed, then you would just input the value and select go. After you would navigate to the SQL tab automatically, it shows the SQL code, Inserting to your table, in the specific fields, the values of what you typed in. If you navigate to the Browse tab, you can see the data in the row you just created.
Overall, I thing phpMyAdmin makes managing the database very easy. It provides a simple Graphical User Interface (GUI) for the user to manage the database without having to remember the SQL code. I think it’s a great tool to have to manage the database.
